Memorial Day weekend is set to exceed all previous records as 45.1 million Americans plan to travel at least 50 miles from home, according to AAA. This marks a significant increase compared to pre-pandemic levels, with the number of air travelers expected to rise by 2% from last year. However, the travel season is expected to be more challenging, particularly at New York airports where recent disruptions have caused delays.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced yet another ground delay at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), adding to the growing frustration of flyers. Meanwhile, the recently implemented REAL ID requirement has raised concerns about potential delays during the security process, as passengers must now present compliant identification to board flights.
Travel experts such as Gary Leff, a Texas-based travel industry expert and author of the blog ‘View From the Wing,’ have advised flyers to avoid New York airports for connecting flights, citing ongoing disruptions. Brandon Blewett, the Texas-based author of ‘How to Avoid Strangers on Airplanes,’ recommends travelers consider alternatives to EWR like LGA and JFK until runway issues and ATC staffing problems are resolved.
TSA spokespersons have urged passengers to obtain REAL IDs or to bring other acceptable forms of identification for travel. Those who present non-compliant IDs may experience additional screening or be directed to a separate area. Despite these challenges, summer travel is expected to continue, with the TSA urging travelers to finalize their plans and ensure they are properly equipped for the upcoming weeks of travel.
