America’s parents’ coalition, the American Parents Coalition (APC), has launched a multifaceted campaign to pressure Meta, alleging that the company’s AI chatbots are endangering children with potentially inappropriate interactions. The APC has mobilized a three-pronged strategy to engage lawmakers, create tools for parents, and publicize these concerns through visible campaign tactics, such to the mobile billboards at Meta’s D.C. and California headquarters. The campaign was launched with urgency, following recent media reports that suggest the AI systems designed by Meta may inadvertently support or facilitate harmful interactions with minors.
This push follows an investigative journalism piece by the Wall Street Journal that raised concerns about how Meta’s metrics and focus on engagement could lead to risks for children. The article revealed an internal analysis and testing that found the AI chatbots could engage in discussions that escalate to sexual content, even when detecting the user as underage. The campaign is further amplified by the FBI’s recent targeting of 250 suspects in a network of online predators exploiting children. APC Executive Director Alleigh Marre has been vocal in her criticisms, emphasizing that this is a recurring issue for Meta, who she asserts cannot be trusted to self-regulate, urging Congress to intervene to hold the company accountable.
Meta has responded by highlighting the steps they’re taking to enhance safety for minors, including the introduction of age-appropriate guardrails, parental supervision tools, and the expansion of “Teen Accounts” to Facebook and Messenger. These measures aim to block explicit conversations with chatbots and to provide parents with visibility into their children’s online interactions. However, APC and the WSJ report suggest that there are still significant concerns that remain unaddressed, particularly around how Meta’s AI systems are being developed and prioritized for engagement metrics, potentially at the expense of child safety standards. As the debate over AI’s role in children’s lives continues, the APC’s actions signal an intensified public and political scrutiny of Meta’s practices.
