A TikTok video played a pivotal role in the early diagnosis of subungual melanoma for Lauren Koltcz, a 45-year-old mother from North Royalton, Ohio. The video, shared by dermatologists, prompted Koltcz to consult a doctor after noticing a strange brown line on her fingernail. Initially, she attributed the marking to a vitamin deficiency, but as the line thickened and spread, she sought medical attention. Her nurse practitioner suggested a fungal infection, but after the line expanded and a TikTok video caught her attention, she booked an appointment at the Cleveland Clinic. The resulting biopsy confirmed the presence of subungual melanoma, a rare skin cancer that develops under the nail. Caught at stage 0, the cancer was localized, offering a high survival rate, according to Dr. Alison Vidimos of the clinic. Koltcz’s experience underscores the importance of monitoring nail changes, as subungual melanoma is often diagnosed late due to its subtle presentation. Her surgery was successful, and she now undergoes regular follow-ups with her dermatologist.
