American Olympic rugby star Alev Kelter will face a judicial hearing and possible lengthy suspension after being sent off in a women’s rugby test match on Saturday for stamping on the head of an opponent. The incident drew significant attention as officials ruled the play ‘deliber’te and dangerous,’ emphasizing the strict rules against head contact in rugby. The match, part of the Pacific Four Series, saw Team USA, led by Kelter, face Australia, who ultimately secured a 27-19 victory. Referees issued a red card around the 79th minute after a video review. Officials determined Kelter forcefully stamped on the head of Australian center Georgie Friedrichs. The referee described the act as ‘thuggery, reckless, and dangerous foul play, necessitating a permanent red card.’ While Friedrichs avoided major injuries, Team USA coach Sione Fukofuka apologized to the Australian players. The incident underscores the sport’s recent emphasis on player safety, with rules strictly enforced to prevent head injuries. Kelter, a three-time U.S. Olympic representative, previously played ice hockey and soccer for the University of Wisconsin. Judicial hearings for such incidents typically occur within 48 hours of the match.
