Newark Mayor Ras Baraka has faced mounting allegations of fostering a toxic work environment for women within his administration, sparking widespread scrutiny and controversy. The mayor, a prominent Democratic candidate for New Jersey governor, has been accused of allowing his close associates—including his brothers and other associates—to sexually harass and assault female employees. These allegations have drawn significant attention to Baraka’s leadership, with critics questioning the integrity of his administration.
One of the most prominent accusations involves Baraka’s brother, Amiri Baraka Jr., who was appointed as the mayor’s chief of staff. In 2020, Sebrivious Scott, a woman hired through a prisoner reentry program, accused Baraka Jr. of silencing her after she raised concerns about being sexually assaulted. Scott alleged that she informed Baraka Jr. of her experiences with sexual assault by her boss and the denial of full-time employment for refusing sexual favors. Instead of taking the allegations seriously, Baraka Jr. reportedly told her, “Don’t be coming here complaining about discrimination. You should be happy you have a job.” The situation eventually led to a settlement, though Scott declined to provide details, citing her lawyer’s advice.
Another incident involved Baraka’s brother, Obalaji Jones, who was accused of sexual assault by Dannisha Clyburn, a former employee of the City of Newark. Clyburn claimed that Jones sexually assaulted her in 2013 during a political speech by Baraka and attempted to assault her again in 2015. She had previously been a political supporter of Baraka but came forward after witnessing the suffering of other women, saying that the mayor’s leadership had created a culture of abuse. Clyburn and other former employees have since spoken out publicly, adding to the pressure on Baraka to address the issue.
Baraka has also been linked to Kiburi Tucker, a former associate who has a history of sexual assault accusations. Tucker, who was allegedly business partners with Baraka’s wife for years, has remained close to the mayor and has publicly supported his gubernatorial campaign. Despite legal troubles, including a four-year prison sentence for aggravated assault and drug possession, Tucker claims to be Baraka’s “best friend” and has continued to express support for his political ambitions. This association has raised questions about the mayor’s judgment and accountability.
These allegations have intensified scrutiny of Baraka’s leadership, with critics calling for accountability and transparency. The mayor has faced backlash following recent events, including his arrest at an ICE facility, which has drawn further attention to his behavior. Baraka has denied the allegations, stating that he was unfairly targeted. However, the controversy continues to grow, with calls for an independent investigation into his administration.
