Greenpeace activists have stolen a wax statue of French President Emmanuel Macron from the Grévin Museum in Paris as part of a protest against France’s business ties with Russia. The environmental group claimed they ‘borrowed’ the statue, believing Macron does not deserve to be exhibited in the world-renowned cultural establishment until he terminates French contracts with Russia and initiates an ambitious ecological transition on a European scale. The activists also unfurled a banner at the Russian embassy in Paris, denouncing current dealings with Russia. Images showed two men hauling the wax figure through the streets of the French capital. A Greenpeace spokesperson told Reuters that the activists had planned the action carefully to ensure it happened quickly, entering the museum as regular visitors before heading to the room where the statue was located. Other activists were waiting in a getaway car outside the museum, with the group planning to return the statute at an unknown date. The Grévin Museum stated its statue of Macron is one of more than 200 celebrities on display who are ‘immortalized in wax,’ and previously showed the Macron statue standing next to a wax figure of former President Joe Biden. Greenpeace France director Jean-Francois Julliard told Reuters that while they do not deny the political, diplomatic, and financial support of France and Europe for Ukraine, they cannot be coherent and consistent if they support Ukraine while continuing to import massive amounts of gas, chemical fertilizers, and uranium.
