Apple Discloses It Shared Push Notification Data with Global Governments

Apple has disclosed that it shared data related to thousands of push notifications with governments around the world. According to a report from 404 Media, the data includes identifying information about targeted devices and, in some cases, unencrypted content such as the text of notifications. The data, published by Apple, provides the first concrete figure on the number of requests governments make for push notification data. One notable instance involved Israel requesting data related to nearly 700 push notifications as part of a single query. The practice was first exposed in 2023 when Senator Ron Wyden revealed the issue, which also applied to Google. The data spans six-month periods from July 2022 to June 2024 and includes details such as the associated Apple account, phone number, and email address. The transparency report underscores the ongoing debate surrounding digital privacy and government surveillance.
