Bishop Warns of Escalating Violence Against Christians in Nigeria

Bishop Wilfred Anagbe of the Makurdi Diocese in Nigeria testified before the House Subcommittee on Africa in March 2.025, raising urgent concerns about the growing violence targeting Christians in the country. During the hearing, the bishop detailed instances of attacks, including arson, targeted killings, and kidnappings, which have intensified in recent months. He attributed the violence to the persistent threat of Boko Haram and other extremist groups, which have continued to destabilize regions and spread fear among local communities.

Anagbe’s testimony included video evidence from various sources, showing the destruction of churches and homes, as well as testimonies from survivors. He stressed that the violence is not only endangering the lives of Christians but also undermining the broader social fabric of Nigeria. The bishop called for increased international support, including military and diplomatic aid, to combat the violence and protect religious freedom. His remarks also highlighted the need for greater awareness and solidarity with the affected communities, both within Nigeria and globally.

The subcommittee, which includes members from the U.S. Congress, is exploring ways to strengthen support for Nigeria’s security agencies and humanitarian efforts. Bishop Anagbe’s testimony added a moral dimension to the discussion, emphasizing the humanitarian crisis resulting from the violence while advocating for collective action to address the root causes of extremism and insecurity in the region.
