New York Mayor Eric Adams Condemns Anti-ICE Violence Amid LA Riots

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has issued a stern warning against anti-ICE riots, stating that the city will not tolerate violence as Los Angeles grapples with ongoing unrest. Speaking at a news conference, Adams stressed that while New York is a city that allows peaceful protests, any form of violence or lawlessness will not be accepted. The mayor’s comments come as cities across the country face potential civil disturbances, with recent demonstrations in Los Angeles sparking significant concern.

Adams emphasized the importance of maintaining trust in the system rather than fostering fear, acknowledging that some New Yorkers may be angry or frustrated but reiterating that the city will not permit violence. Fox 5 New York reported that there have been recent protests throughout the city, some of which have resulted in individuals being detained.

Speaking at the press conference, Adams continued by saying, “The escalation of protests in Los Angeles over the last couple of days is unacceptable and would not be tolerated if attempted in our city.” He further stressed that the city’s approach to protests is to ensure they remain peaceful while maintaining public safety and order.

New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch echoed Adams’ stance, stating that if civil unrest similar to that in California were to occur in New York, the NYPD would deploy its full resources to respond. Tisch emphasized that the department is committed to maintaining public order while adhering to the law. However, she also made it clear that the city does not engage in civil immigration enforcement and has no tolerance for violence, property damage, or blockade-style demonstrations.

Adams’ position on immigration matters has been aligned with that of the Trump administration, as seen in his support for allowing an ICE office to be established at Rikers Island. This has led to a legal battle, with the city council suing the mayor over the issue. Adams has also expressed cooperation with Tom Homan, the border czar, on immigration enforcement. In a previous joint interview, Homan described the move as a “game changer,” highlighting the intelligence that could be gained from the operations of criminal organizations at Rikers Island.

Adams has been vocal in his criticism of the far left for hijacking the narrative around ICE, stating that the agency does not run schools or churches and that the current situation is merely a distraction from the real issues facing communities. He has also reiterated his stance that federal enforcement is necessary to combat migration-related crime.

Meanwhile, the situation in Los Angeles has continued to escalate, with over 100 arrests reported as protests and riots persist. President Trump has deployed troops to the area, citing concerns over law and order, while Mayor Karen Bass and Governor Gavin Newsom have called for calm. Newsom has accused Trump of inciting violence by his rhetoric, although the president has claimed that the state and local officials in Los Angeles are incompetent in managing the crisis.

As of now, ICE’s aggressive enforcement strategies continue to be a focal point of public and political discourse, with the agency aiming to arrest a minimum of 3,000 illegal immigrants daily, including those with criminal histories. The ongoing tensions surrounding immigration enforcement in both New York and Los Angeles highlight the broader national debate on immigration policies and federal versus local control over enforcement activities.
