House GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., has initiated an investigation into Planned Parenthood’s use of federal funds, accusing the organization of misusing taxpayer money for abortions and gender-affirming care for minors. The probe, led by Greene’s subcommittee, aims to determine if the nonprofit is violating the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits the use of federal funds for abortions. The investigation comes amid ongoing GOP efforts to restrict federal funding for abortion services and aligns with former President Donald Trump’s policies that seek to limit such support.
Greene’s letter to Planned Parenthood CEO Alexis McGill Johnson questions whether the nonprofit is commingling federal funds and using them for unpermitted purposes. Federal funds are barred from being used for abortions under the Hyde Amendment, a measure that Trump has also supported through executive action. However, Greene’s letter suggests she accuses Planned Parenthood of using federal funds for both abortions and gender-affirming care for minors, which is a contentious issue. The group, which has long been a target of Republican criticism, has supporters who view it as a critical provider of women’s healthcare, especially after the Supreme Court’s decision in June 2022 that overturned Roe v. Wade.
The probe includes an examination of Planned Parenthood’s financial records from January 2020 to June 2025. This period includes the 2022 Supreme Court decision that sent abortion rights back to the states. The investigation also focuses on the organization’s provision of gender-affirming care for minors under the age of 18, which Greene claims lacks sufficient medical or psychological oversight. She cited a report showing that 45 affiliate health centers provided hormone therapy for gender-affirming care, though some of these services were labeled as “other procedures” to obscure the true number of services.
Greene’s subcommittee is investigating whether Planned Parenthood is consistently adhering to its own parental consent policies. She highlighted that some Planned Parenthood health centers will provide cross-sex hormones to minors as young as 16 years old with parental consent, while accusing the organization of lacking uniformity in enforcing these policies. Additionally, Greene has requested non-public financial statements, a list of independent affiliate health centers, informed consent documents, and other supporting documentation.
The probe is part of a broader GOP strategy to limit federal funding for abortion services, as reflected in the recent passage of a provision in Trump’s
