Former Alabama Track Star Eliud Kipsang Dies at 28 After Cardiac Arrest

Kipsang, born in Kenya, was a current holder of several program records at the university. He suffered cardiac arrest on Friday, June 6, and was admitted to the intensive care unit at Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, Washington, but died just days later. The university expressed deep sorrow over his passing, with head coach Dan Waters calling him one of the most gifted athletes to wear the Crimson and White.

Kipsang’s achievements include winning gold at the 2021 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships in the men’s 1,500m and the SEC Cross Country Championships. He was also named SEC Runner of the Year that year. The following season, he set the collegiate record in the men’s 1,500m, with his time of 3:33.74 remaining one of the top five collegiate times. Kipsang still holds three program records in both indoor and outdoor events and has six top-10, all-time placements in Alabama history.

The running community has lost a remarkable soul, according to the university. The university’s statement emphasized his impact beyond records and championships, noting he was a beloved teammate and a dear friend to the coach. The community is mourning the loss of such a talented athlete and a valuable member of the Alabama family.
