Family of Marine Veteran Criticizes DA’s Crime Approach After Illegal Migrant Allegedly Shot Him

The family of U.S. Marine Corps veteran Jimmy Friesenhahn, who was allegedly shot by an illegal migrant in San Antonio, is calling for stricter law enforcement and a harder stance on crime after the suspect was reportedly released multiple times without being placed on an immigration hold. Friesenhahn, 44, remains hospitalized after being critically injured in the incident, which left him paralyzed and unable to speak.

Wilmer Vladimir Ruiz Ortega, 29, was arrested by police after allegedly shooting Friesenhahn at the El Patio Sports Bar in San Antonio. The father of a 5-month-old was working as a security guard and saw a gun in Ortega’s pocket, according to police. A struggle ensued, resulting in Friesenhahn being shot twice in his bulletproof vest and once in the neck.

The family claims the suspect had been booked into Bexar County Jail at least three times since 2020 but was never put on an immigration hold. Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales’ office brought an aggravated assault charge against Ortega, which raised concerns for the victims’ family that the charge was insufficient given Ortega’s alleged intent to cause harm.

Friesenhahn’s family is focused on his recovery and is looking into specialized spinal cord injury centers. They have emphasized the need for new technology and medical care to help Friesenhahn recover to the best of his ability. The case has reignited a broader discussion about immigration policy and law enforcement priorities in the United States.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s requests for comment on the matter. The family continues to push for stricter accountability and better protection for American citizens, especially in light of the alleged illegal migrant’s repeated release from custody.
