LPGA legend Annika Sorenstam has expressed her support for the growing influence of golf influencers like Paige Spiranac, Grace Charis, and Tisha Alyn, who have played a significant role in expanding the sport’s popularity. While Sorenstam, a seven-time major champion, remains one of the most recognizable names in women’s golf, the current generation of fans may be more familiar with social media personalities who have leveraged platforms like Instagram and TikTok to gain massive followings. Spiranac, in particular, has amassed over 4 million followers on Instagram and 1.6 million on TikTok, making her one of the most influential figures in the field.
As the LPGA Tour continues to attract top talent such as Nelly Korda, Rose Zhang, Lydia Ko, and Jeeno Thitikul, the average golf fan may not be as aware of these athletes as they are of influencers who have brought a different approach to growing the game. Sorenstam, who retired in 2008, has consistently emphasized the importance of engaging new audiences, particularly through the evolving media landscape. ‘I think it is great,’ she told Fox News Digital. ‘I just want more people to play, to enjoy it, to have a good time, and experience it, whether it comes from traditional golfers, the way we used to watch it on TV or read about it in magazines or whatever.’
The Swedish golfer acknowledged that the way information is shared has changed dramatically, with social media now serving as a primary source for many fans. She noted that influencers bring a unique perspective to the sport, whether through fashion, trick shots, or other creative content that appeals to a wider audience. ‘They all have a little niche,’ Sorenstam observed, highlighting the diversity of engagement that social media has introduced to the sport.
Sorenstam’s comments reflect a broader acceptance of the evolving role of social media in promoting golf, while still recognizing the importance of traditional golfing excellence. She is set to participate in the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Club next month, where she has finished in the top ranks in past editions but has yet to secure a victory in the celebrity tournament.
