Vanessa Hernández, known as Nezza, performed the U.S. national anthem in Spanish at a Dodgers game as a protest against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), sparking backlash. She claims to have received death threats and expressed feeling unwelcome at the stadium.
Nezza, who wore a Dominican Republic shirt during the performance, explained her choice as a response to the ICE presence in Los Angeles and ongoing protests. She stated that the backlash, including death threats, was expected but emphasized her pride as an American and her support for those seeking better conditions for the country.
Despite the negative reactions, Nezza received support from several Latin celebrities, which she found heartening and reaffirming. She also noted that other Los Angeles-based professional sports teams, such as the NWSL’s Angely City F.C., showed solidarity with the protest movement by providing T-shirts with the message ‘Immigrant City Football Club.’ This was part of a broader trend of public demonstrations against immigration policies in the U.S.
Her performance occurred on the day of numerous ‘No Kings’ protests, which were against the military parade in Washington, D.C., that coincided with President Donald Trump’s birthday. This event also marked the 250th birthday celebration of the United States Army.
