Will McKechnie, a 66-year-old grandfather from Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, has made dramatic lifestyle changes that helped him reverse his pre-diabetes diagnosis. He was initially unaware of his health risks, despite his active lifestyle which included dancing seven times a week and maintaining a medium-sized shirt. His routine snacks of chocolate and chips, however, proved to be a hidden threat to his health.
During a routine blood test in May 2023, McKechnie’s blood sugar level was found to be 6.2%, indicating pre-diabetes. It wasn’t until a year later, during an unrelated medical appointment, that he learned the results. The news left him ‘petrified’ at the prospect of his health declining, especially after his doctor stated the condition was not reversible in 48 years.
Determined to improve his health, McKechnie began making significant changes. He eliminated unhealthy snacks, started eating slower, and focused on nourishing his body with whole, nutritious foods. His meals now take significantly longer to consume, with lunch alone taking 40 minutes. He also cut down on sugar and adopted a more mindful eating approach, which reduced his cravings for unhealthy snacks.
McKechnie’s efforts paid off, leading to a weight loss of 27 pounds, bringing him down to 142 pounds and a size small shirt. His waist also reduced by two inches, and within nine months, his blood sugar levels dropped to 5.9%. He now feels stronger and more energetic than ever, attributing his success to his proactive health management. McKechnie also credits his long-standing commitment to health by quitting smoking in 1986 and abstaining from alcohol since 2012.
He emphasizes the importance of regular health screenings, even for those who appear healthy. His story serves as a powerful reminder that small, consistent changes can lead to significant improvements in overall health. McKechnie, who is also a devoted caregiver to his 18-month-old grandson and teaches two dance classes weekly, is now committed to further improving his health and inspiring others to take proactive steps in their own health journeys.
