Armed Suspect Killed by Church Security at Wayne Church Shooting
During a Sunday service at Crosspointe Church in Wayne, Michigan, an armed suspect opened fire, prompting church security to intervene and kill the attacker. One individual was wounded, though no fatalities were confirmed. The Wayne Police Department reported that the suspect, a 31-year-old white male from Romulus, was found carrying a long gun and handgun, and was likely suffering from a mental health crisis. The FBI is monitoring the incident, confirming it appears to be an isolated act with no accomplices.
The shooting occurred around 11:45 a.m., with the suspect reportedly entering the church while a local man attempted to stop him using a vehicle. The suspect engaged in a confrontation with the vehicle, firing at the driver. Multiple church staff members approached the suspect, with some of them reportedly shooting him after he opened fire. The staff members involved in the incident chose not to be identified at this time. Police are still conducting an investigation into the suspect’s motives and actions leading up to the shooting.
Wayne Police Chief Ryan Strong stated that the suspect’s specific motives for targeting the church are unknown. Although the suspect was not affiliated with the church, the police believe he was planning a mass shooting based on preliminary evidence. The FBI has also stated they are monitoring the incident and have not found any indication of an accomplice.
Following the shooting, Polk County, Florida Sheriff Grady Judd addressed the incident in a social media post, urging congregants and church leadership to remain vigilant and have contingency plans in place. He emphasized the importance of having trained individuals ready to respond to an active shooter situation. Judd highlighted that several churches have already implemented such measures, which could have potentially prevented the tragedy at Crosspointe Church.
Strong noted that the church had a security plan in place and that the staff’s quick actions saved many lives. The police are working with the FBI to determine any further details surrounding the incident. As of now, the shooting remains under investigation, with authorities emphasizing the need for heightened awareness and preparedness in religious institutions.
