Ella Emhoff Expresses Emotional Struggles as She Votes for Zohran Mamdani in NYC Primary

Former Vice President Kamala Harris’ stepdaughter, Ella Emhoff, shared her emotional experience of returning to the same New York City polling station where she had voted for her stepmother in November. The visit stirred feelings of ‘trauma’ as she reflected on Harris’s defeat. Emhoff had previously endorsed Zohran Mamdani in the NYC mayoral race, who claimed victory in the Democratic primary. Mamdani’s progressive agenda has sparked widespread controversy and significant political debate, despite his popularity among some New Yorkers.

In the second part of the video, Emhoff sported an ‘I Voted’ sticker and said she was ‘feeling a huge mix of emotions,’ adding that it was ‘spectacular seeing New York come together in this way and rally behind Zohran.’ Emhoff was among several celebrity guests — including ‘Sex and the City’ star Cynthia Nixon and actor Kal Penn — at Mamdani’s watch party. While the results of the primary are unofficial, Mamdani claimed victory, and former Governor Andrew Cuomo, the other major contender, has conceded. The outcome of the primary has already drawn strong political reactions, with some Republicans labeling Mamdani a ‘radical’ and ‘antisemite.’

Mamdani’s proposals, which include initiatives such as free public transit, a network of city-owned grocery stores, and free universal childcare for children from age 6 weeks to 5 years, have attracted both supporters and critics. Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., criticized Mamdani, saying that ‘a radical, Defund-the-Police, Communist, raging antisemite will most likely win the New York City Democrat mayoral primary.’ Despite the controversy, Mamdani has gained a strong following among certain demographics in New York City, with Emhoff being one of his prominent supporters. The New York City Board of Elections is set to release the official primary results on July 1, according to Fox 5.
