A new study reveals that the compound found in chili peppers, capsaicin, can positively impact the gut microbiome, promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria while suppressing harmful ones. This, in turn, enhances the production of tryptophan, an essential amino acid linked to the synthesis of neurotransmitters like serotonin, which play a crucial role in regulating mood, sleep, and digestion.
Bryan Quoc Le, Ph.D., a food scientist with Mendocino Food Consulting, discusses the health advantages of spicy foods. He notes that capsaicin can also offer ‘serious benefits’ when consumed in moderate amounts, suggesting that a daily dose of 0.01% could be effective for health improvement without overwhelming the stomach. To ease into spicy foods, Le recommends starting with pickled pepperoncinis before progressing to milder peppers like jalapeños and serranos, eventually moving to the hotter varieties such as habaneros and ghost peppers.
Ken Grey, an advanced practitioner of Oriental medicine, supports the health benefits of spice, particularly its role in enhancing circulation and metabolism. He highlights how naturally hot or spicy foods can aid in removing blockages in the body and promoting better heart health and digestion. Grey emphasizes the importance of balance, cautioning that excessive consumption of spicy foods may lead to side effects like dry cough, heartburn, and acid reflux. He advises readers to be mindful of the Scoville scale, a measure of heat intensity, noting that bell peppers typically have 0 Scoville heat units, while jalapeños can reach up to 8000 SHUs.
