Angels Manager Ron Washington to Stay on Medical Leave for 2025 Season

The Los Angeles Angels have announced that manager Ron Washington will remain on medical leave for the remainder of the 2025 season with an unspecified health issue. The decision was made after Washington, 73, experienced shortness of breath following the team’s series against the New York Yankees, which concluded on June 19. After returning to Southern California, Washington underwent a series of tests and was placed on medical leave. This makes him the oldest manager in Major League Baseball.

Washington was hired by the Angels prior to the 2024 season, and has a record of 103-140 in 243 games with the team. He previously managed the Texas Rangers from 2007 to 2014, amassing a 664-611 record. During his tenure with the Rangers, he led the team to back-to-back World Series appearances in 2010 and 2011 before abruptly resigning in September 2014.

Following Washington’s medical leave, interim manager Ray Montgomery, the Angels’ bench coach, has been named to take over. This is Montgomery’s first time as an MLB manager in his coaching career. He joined the Angels as director of player personnel in 2020 and became the bench coach in 2021. The team currently has a 40-41 record for the season, with a 7-4 record under Montgomery’s interim leadership.

On Friday, the Angels lost 15-9 to the Washington Nationals. The team is set to face the Nationals again in the second game of their three-game series at 9:38 p.m. ET on Saturday. The Angels’ general manager, Perry Minasian, expressed confidence in the team’s resilience and toughness, noting that the players are continuing to play as hard as they would for Washington.
