Ukraine’s military intelligence agency HUR has reported that Russia is reviving its inventory of outdated T-62 tanks in response to a critical shortage of modern armored vehicles and specialized components during its ongoing war with Ukraine. The agency attributes the limited capacity to produce advanced tanks to Russia’s industrial shortcomings and the lack of imported high-tech parts essential for modern military equipment. HUR stated that these tanks are primarily being restored at a facility in Atamanovka, Russia’s far-eastern Zabaykalsky Krai.
The intelligence claims that Russia has been transferring 21 T-62 tanks from its eastern military district to the European part of the country, indicating a strategic reallocation of resources. HUR emphasized that the Soviet-era tanks, many of which have been stored for decades without proper maintenance, are in deteriorating condition. However, some are still being deployed as stationary firing points in defensive positions. With Russia having lost over 10,970 tanks in the war, HUR warns that the revival of these older models reflects a temporary solution to the current shortage of advanced tanks like the T-90M and T-72B3M.
The situation highlights the broader challenges Russia faces in maintaining its military capabilities. HUR’s report underscores the strain on Russia’s industrial base and its reliance on aging equipment to sustain operations.
