WNBA Rookie Paige Bueckers Addresses Media’s Role in Isolating Black Women

WNBA rookie Paige Bueckers, the first overall draft pick in 2025, recently addressed her comments from 2021 about using her platform to celebrate Black women, discussing the media’s role in isolating athletes. During a podcast interview on ‘Nilosophy,’ Bueckers was asked about her remarks from the 2021 ESPYS, where she emphasized the importance of using her influence to uplift Black women in sports media. Bueckers expressed gratitude for the media’s efforts to provide coverage and attention to athletes, acknowledging their role in keeping the game in the public eye. However, she also criticized the tendency of media to focus on individual achievements rather than collective efforts, pointing out that it can lead to a sense of isolation for athletes, particularly women of color. She explained that while the media provides opportunities for visibility, it often pressures athletes to make everything about themselves, rather than sharing the spotlight with others. Bueckers emphasized the importance of collaboration and collective effort, citing her belief that no one succeeds on their own. She further highlighted her faith as a significant part of her journey, stating that her platform is used to glorify God and spread light on others, rather than focusing solely on her personal achievements. In May, after being selected as the first overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft by the Dallas Wings, Bueckers spoke out again about the ongoing issue of unequal coverage for Black women in the league. She noted that the disparity in media attention continues to be a pressing concern, citing the persistent influence of White privilege in marketing opportunities and marketability. Bueckers believes in using her platform to advocate for equal opportunities, recognizing the advantages that come with White privilege and vowing to counteract these biases through her actions and influence. She emphasized the need for equal opportunity in the sports industry and the importance of addressing systemic inequalities to ensure that all athletes, regardless of race or gender, have the chance to succeed. Bueckers’ comments reflect a broader conversation within the WNBA about the representation and recognition of Black women in the league, highlighting the ongoing challenges and the determination of athletes to push for equity in media coverage and marketing opportunities.
