Super Bowl champion Willie Colon has called on Jacksonville Jaguars players to rigorously test rookie Travis Hunter as the wide receiver and cornerback prospect seeks to play both sides of the ball in 2025. Colon, who had a storied career with the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets, emphasized the need for Hunter to be pushed to his limits to prepare for the challenges of dual-position play in the NFL.
“I know how I would approach a guy like this. I’m going to test his armor,” Colon said on FOX Sports’ “Breakfast, Ball.” “I’m going to see how tough you really are. If you want to be a two-way player in the NFL, I’m going to see if you’re strong enough to be a two-way player. So, when I’m pulling around that corner, I’m going to test that 12 on your chest.
Colon’s comments reflect the growing skepticism among veteran players about Hunter’s ability to handle the physical and mental demands of being a two-way player. While Hunter’s dual-threat potential has made him a valuable asset for the Jaguars, many believe that a player in his position will eventually be moved to one side of the field, allowing him to specialize and excel in a single role.
The Jaguars traded up to secure Hunter in the 2024 draft, recognizing his potential as a Heisman Trophy winner and standout performer at Colorado. Hunter, who had a remarkable college career with 86 catches for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns, also had 36 tackles with four interceptions. His versatility as both a wide receiver and cornerback has made him a coveted prospect for NFL teams, but the reality of the NFL may necessitate specialization.
