Kyiv Independent Launches ‘How to Help Ukraine’ Newsletter to Mobilize Support

The Kyiv Independent has launched a new monthly newsletter titled ‘How to Help Ukraine’ to enable members to take direct action in supporting the war-torn nation. The initiative, launched in response to member inquiries about ways to assist beyond financial donations, has already raised $16,500 for the Leleka Foundation in just four days.

The first edition of the newsletter, sent on June 12, highlighted the Leleka Foundation, a U.S.-Ukrainian charity that provides critical medical supplies to front-line medics. This fundraising effort has already secured the purchase of medical backpacks containing essential trauma equipment, which can save ten lives per unit. The project reflects the Kyiv Independent’s commitment to fostering civic engagement and supporting Ukrainian civil society during the ongoing conflict. The newsletter will spotlight different organizations each month, allowing members to contribute time, money, or advocacy to causes aligned with the publication’s mission.

Daryna Shevchenko, CEO of the Kyiv Independent, emphasized that the initiative was driven by the community’s deep passion for supporting Ukraine. ‘We always knew that our community was passionate about supporting us, but that wasn’t the only thing driving them,’ she stated. ‘Many of our members have repeatedly expressed a sincere desire to help Ukraine in ways that go beyond donating to the Kyiv Independent. Now, we’ve finally found the resources to act on that.’

The Kyiv Independent conducted over a dozen in-depth interviews with supporters to find out exactly what they wanted, and the ‘How to Help Ukraine’ newsletter is the result. It’s already allowed members to give help where it’s most needed. The newsletter’s structure ensures that members receive focused information and actionable steps to support Ukrainian civil society. The initiative has not only raised funds but also increased awareness about the critical role of Ukrainian civil organizations in the current conflict.

Leleka Foundation, which was founded in December 2014, has been instrumental in providing medical supplies to the front lines. The organization’s work has continued despite the challenges, and the recent fundraising effort has played a crucial role in sustaining their operations. Leleka has a team of 20 staff members and volunteers across two continents, and donations like those raised through the newsletter will allow them to continue their vital work during uncertain times.

As the newsletter continues, the Kyiv Independent plans to highlight various organizations each month, providing members with opportunities to contribute in meaningful ways. The initiative exemplifies the growing trend of grassroots support for Ukraine, driven by individuals and organizations committed to making a real impact on the ground. This collective effort is a testament to the power of community activism and the importance of sustained support for conflict-affected nations.
