South Dakota Rep. Dusty Johnson Announces Bid for Governor
House Republican Dusty Johnson, South Dakota’s sole member of the House, has launched his bid for governor. The announcement, considered a formality by local media, was made during a campaign event and accompanied by a video shared on social media. Johnson emphasized his congressional record and his support for President Trump, countering recent criticism that he has not adequately backed the former president.
Johnson, who has served in Congress since 2019, previously worked as vice president at a South Dakota-based engineering and consulting firm and held the role of South Dakota Public Utilities commissioner from 2005 to 2011. During his tenure as commissioner, he was appointed chief of staff to former Governor Dennis Daugaard. The announcement followed a period of speculation that Johnson would run, with local media describing the move as a predictable outcome.
Johnson’s campaign announcement came in the wake of recent political developments including the announcement that key House GOP moderate Don Bacon would not seek re-election. In his statement, Johnson highlighted his legislative achievements, including efforts to cut wasteful spending, secure the border, and address China’s trade practices. He emphasized that these efforts have built a foundation for a better future for South Dakotan children, which he argues must now be expanded at the state level.
However, the announcement was quickly followed by criticism from online sources questioning Johnson’s support for Trump. Johnson addressed these claims by citing past interactions, including his attendance at the Super Bowl with Trump and his financial contributions to Trump’s re-election campaign. He also noted that Trump had endorsed him in his 2020 race and served as his state campaign chairman.
Johnson further positioned himself as a key ally of House Speaker Mike Johnson, R–La., noting his role in securing votes for the speaker’s election. He expressed confidence that the House’s version of the Trump-endorsed One Big Beautiful Bill Act would pass the Senate by the GOP’s self-imposed July 4 deadline. The bill, which aims to promote economic growth and reduce regulatory burdens, is seen as a significant legislative priority for the Republican Party.
As Johnson campaigns for governor, his focus will likely center on his record in Congress and his ability to lead South Dakota’s economic and social initiatives. With the state’s economy and political landscape shaped by national trends, Johnson’s campaign will need to navigate both local and national political dynamics to secure the governorship.
