The Trump administration has filed a lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles, alleging that the city’s sanctuary policies impede federal immigration enforcement and contribute to the recent violence and chaos witnessed in the area. The legal action was announced by Attorney General Pam Bondi, who stated that these policies ‘drive the violence and chaos’ and undermine law enforcement at all levels. The Department of Justice argues that under the Supremacy Clause, the city’s practices of treating ICE differently than other law enforcement agencies are illegal and unconstitutional. The lawsuit claims that LA’s policies include restricting access to individuals and properties for federal immigration authorities, preventing contractors from sharing information, and resisting enforcement of certain federal laws. This is not the first time the Trump administration has taken such measures; previously, they had also filed lawsuits against four cities in New Jersey for similar reasons. Earlier this month, LA experienced significant protests and riots following ICE operations, which led to the deployment of the National Guard and a legal dispute over its use. LA’s Mayor Karen Bass criticized the deployment of the National Guard, stating it was used as a pretext for sending the Marine Corps into the city, which she argued would target American citizens. While the city has not yet responded to the lawsuit, the administration remains committed to challenging these policies, highlighting their perceived role in fostering instability and undermining federal law enforcement.
