Dual U.S.-Canadian Citizen Arrested for Smuggling Romanian Family to U.S. That Led to Tragic Deaths

A dual U.S.-Canadian citizen, Timothy Oakes, 34, has been arrested and charged with fatal human smuggling after a tragic incident involving a Romanian family of four that resulted in their deaths and the death of his own brother. Oakes was apprehended on June 15 while attempting to cross into the U.S. from Canada. He is accused of orchestrating a smuggling operation that led to a boat capsizing in the St. Lawrence River, causing the deaths of the family, including two young children, and his sibling. The Justice Department has highlighted the defendants’ financial motives as the key factor in the incident, emphasizing the dangers faced by those attempting to cross illegally under such conditions. Co-conspirators, including Dakota Montour, Kawisiiostha Celecia Sharrow, and Janet Terrance, have all entered guilty pleas, with prosecutors pointing to their callous disregard for human life.
