Lisa Murkowski Voted for Megabill Amid Key Concessions

Senator Lisa Murkowski described her decision to support the Senate Republicans’ version of the ‘megabill’ as ‘agonizing,’ underscoring the difficult choice she faced after securing key concessions on federal health and food-aid programs for Alaska. She emphasized that while the bill did not meet all her expectations, the changes made were crucial for the state’s interests.

Murkowski highlighted the modifications in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program that provide greater flexibility for Alaska and additional support for rural hospitals, which she called ‘very key.’ She also praised the removal of the controversial tax on solar and wind energy projects, a provision she had actively pushed for. Meanwhile, Murkowski expressed her desire to see President Donald Trump’s 2017 tax cuts extended, which she believes would benefit her state’s economy.

Speaking to reporters after the vote, Murkowski stated, ‘I had to look on balance, because the people in my state are the ones that I put first. We do not have a perfect bill by any stretch of the imagination.’ She urged both the White House and top Hill Republicans to send the bill to conference rather than pushing it through the House this week, criticizing the ‘artificial’ timeline Trump and GOP leaders had set for the bill’s approval by July 4.

Murkowski emphasized the need for a more thorough review process, saying, ‘I’ve urged the White House that I think that more process is needed to this bill, because I would like to see a better outcome for people in this country.’ Trump, meanwhile, appeared to waver on his July 4 deadline, telling reporters ‘I think it’s very hard to do.’ This indicates a potential shift in the administration’s approach to the legislative process, possibly allowing for more bipartisan collaboration in the coming days.
