The Miami Dolphins have acquired former Pro Bowl tight end Darren Waller from the New York Giants, marking a surprise return to the NFL for the 32-year-old veteran. Waller, who retired after a health scare in November 2023, has rejoined the league as the Dolphins seek to strengthen their offensive roster ahead of training camp.
The trade, which was confirmed by multiple reports, involves the Giants holding Waller’s rights after his retirement announcement. The Dolphins acquired Waller in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round pick and a conditional 2027 seventh-round selection in the NFL Draft, according to ESPN. This trade comes one day after the Dolphins sent their 2024 Pro Bowl tight end, Jonnu Smith, to the Pittsburgh Steelers in a blockbuster deal involving Jalen Ramsey and Minkah Fitzpatrick.
Waller, who was one of the best tight ends in the NFL during his time with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2019 and 2020, had a stellar career with 2,341 receiving yards on 197 receptions and 12 touchdowns. However, his tenure with the Giants was short-lived, as he caught only 52 passes for 552 yards with one touchdown in the 2023 season. After struggling with health issues and retiring, Waller revealed in a YouTube video that he had spent 3½ days in the hospital unable to stand, use the bathroom, or even feed himself.
Waller’s return to the NFL comes after he publicly discussed his past struggles with addiction, including a 2017 overdose that led to a life-changing rehabilitation journey. He has since become an advocate for others facing similar challenges. With the Dolphins, Waller looks to reignite his NFL career, potentially teaming up with star wideouts Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. He will also reunite with his former Raiders tight ends coach, Frank Smith, who worked with him from 2018-2020.
The Dolphins’ acquisition of Waller signals a strategic move to enhance their offensive capabilities as they prepare for the 2024 season. Waller will have to compete with Julian Hill and Pharaoh Brown for the starting role, but his experience and skill set could make him a key contributor for the team. As he reunites with former coaches and teammates, Waller aims to showcase his resilience and determination on the field.
