A recent YouGov survey has shown that almost half of the American public is worried about the United States not remaining a major world power in the next ten years.
The poll suggests that a significant number of Americans believe that the United States may face severe crises in the coming decade, such to experience a complete breakdown of law and order or even a loss of its status as a global superpower. A total of 45% of those surveyed said they believe an economic collapse of the United States is at least somewhat likely, with an equal number predicting the country could experience a total breakdown of law and order.
Furthermore, 40% of respondents said they think a civil war could occur within the next ten years, and 38% believe the United States may no longer be a democracy. Other concerns include a potential shift to authoritarian rule, with 31% believing the country could become a fascist dictatorship and 20% predicting a communist one.
The survey also highlighted the perception that the country is currently experiencing a constitutional crisis. Over half of those polled said they believe this is happening, with the majority of democrats, 82%, and a smaller proportion of Republicans, 26%, concurring. The sentiment was further reflected by a significant portion of Democrats expressing fear about the direction of global affairs, with 47% stating they are very scared about it, in comparison to 10% of Republicans and 30% of independents.
Congressional Democrats have often criticized the current administration, arguing that a major shift in the political system has occurred, whereas Republicans have largely supported the existing government structure. This divide is also evident in the survey results, with 26% of democrats stating the system functions adequately, in contrast to 69% of Republicans who believe it does so.
On another point, the survey indicated that there is an increased feeling of political violence and misinformation in the United States, with at least half of the polled individuals believing that these issues are more severe in the US than in other democracies. This growing concern is reflected in the views of both politicians and ordinary citizens, and may ultimately have a significant impact on the political landscape in the country.
Overall, the poll indicates that the American public is deeply concerned about the future of the United States in terms of its political and economic stability, with many fearing a potential decline in the nation’s global standing or even a complete collapse of the political system. The survey highlights a growing sentiment of anxiety about the direction of the country, which could have far-reaching consequences for the political landscape in the years to come.
