A recent survey has identified the United States’ most impressive airports, with features such as therapy llamas, LED tunnels, and unique art installations making them stand out from the traditional travel hubs. The Washington Post conducted the study, drawing on 450,000 Yelp reviews and responses from over 2,300 travelers to rank the airports. While most travelers prioritize fast security lines and efficient layouts, the top airports have introduced unconventional yet appealing amenities. The rankings highlight how innovation and regional culture are becoming key factors in redefining the airport experience.
Portland’s PDX tops the list, noted for its live trees, sky-lit ceilings, and video walls showcasing natural landscapes. The airport also features occasional therapy llamas, helping ease pre-flight anxiety for anxious travelers. Other top airports, like Detroit’s DTW, offer unique attractions such as an underground LED tunnel and a 39-foot-wide fountain inspired by a flight map. Utah’s SLC, with its newly renovated facility, was praised for its spacious design and mountain views. These innovations have not only enhanced the travel experience but also set new standards for airport design and passenger comfort.
The survey also emphasized the importance of regional specialties and cultural identity in airport design. For example, New Mexico’s ABQ offers piñon coffee, a local specialty, and showcases southwestern architecture with murals by Native American artists. Likewise, Long Beach Airport in California combines Art Deco architecture with al fresco dining and summer concerts, creating a unique travel experience. These airports have managed to blend functionality with creativity, offering more than just a means of transportation.
While the survey underscores the value of these unique experiences, it also highlights the growing demand for efficiency in airport operations. Sheldon Jacobson, an engineering professor at the University of Illinois, noted that the country’s most trafficked airports did not make the list, suggesting that speed and simplicity remain essential for travelers. The rankings thus reflect a balance between innovation and practicality, with the best airports offering a blend of convenience, regional charm, and cutting-edge amenities.
