Texas Leaders Unite in Prayer Amid Devastating Floods

Texas leaders across political lines have urged prayer for flood victims as the state, ranked third most religious in the U.S., copes with devastating floods that have claimed at least 80 lives. Governor Greg Abbott declared July 6 as a ‘Day of Prayer’ as Texas faces the aftermath of catastrophic flooding that has taken at least 91 lives.

Religious leaders from both sides of the political aisle, including Representative Chip Roy, Republican Congressman Dan Crenshaw, and former presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke, have all encouraged prayer and donations for those affected by the floods. Despite their political differences, the leaders have demonstrated unity in the face of tragedy, calling on Texans to come together in faith and support.

Camp Mystic, a private Christian summer camp for girls located in the Hill Country, has also turned to prayer as it mourns the loss of 27 young girls and counselors following the catastrophic flooding on the Guadalupe River. As of Monday afternoon, at least 27 girls who were staying at Camp Mystic were confirmed dead, with 750 attendees at the camp when the wall of water struck. The camp has stated that they are praying constantly for the families of the victims.

Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick described the scene at Camp Mystic, stating that ”The water was at the door. The camp counselor took a rock and smashed out the window. They climbed out the window in bare feet and nothing but a night gown on, in neck-high water.” The incident has sparked prayers and condolences from officials and citizens across the state. Attorney General Ken Paxton added, ”Texans are praying for these families. God be with them during this time of unimaginable pain and suffering.”

The flood has led to widespread devastation, with communities in the Hill Country suffering the most. As the state continues to search for missing individuals and recovery efforts begin, the call for prayers and donations remains a central part of the response. The unity shown by leaders and citizens alike highlights the resilience and faith of the people of Texas in the face of tragedy.
