Oksana Markarova, who has served in the role since April 2021, played a pivotal role in coordinating U.S. military and financial support during the early phases of Russia’s full-scale invasion. The potential change in ambassadorial leadership was raised by Kyiv, with the suggestion that it could be beneficial for both sides, as multiple strong candidates are being considered for the new position.
Among the potential candidates for the ambassadorial role are Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, and Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko. The source indicated that the idea of a replacement was proposed by Kyiv, with the implication that the move could serve mutual interests. However, a spokesperson for Stefanishyna declined to comment on the rumors, maintaining a stance of non-engagement with speculative information.
The discussion about Ukraine’s representation in Washington coincides with ongoing tensions between Kyiv and Washington, particularly in light of the recent pause in U.S. shipments of critical military equipment, including Patriot missiles and precision-guided munitions.
