Doctors warn that staying properly hydrated involves maintaining the balance of electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium. While water is typically the best option for most people, electrolyte supplements are recommended in specific situations, such as intense physical activity or prolonged exposure to heat.
Dr. Brunilda Nazario, chief physician editor at WebMD, said hydration is essential for health and that electrolyte boosters are ‘right in some circumstances.’ She highlighted that signs of dehydration may include stains on clothing from excessive sweating, which could indicate a need for electrolyte replenishment. However, she also cautioned that these drinks can contain high salt levels, which might affect individuals with conditions like high blood pressure or kidney disease.
Dr. Glenn Hirsch added that while regular water is usually sufficient, hydration products can be helpful during prolonged physical activity in hot weather. He warned against relying solely on water without electrolyte replenishment, as it can lead to water intoxication. Hirsch recommended drinking water slowly before engaging in outdoor activities and consuming sports drinks or electrolyte powders as a supplement. Additionally, he noted that salty snacks can serve as a useful alternative to maintain hydration in such conditions.
