House Budget Chair Arrington Seeks to Advance Conservative Priorities via Reconciliation Packages

House Budget Chair Jodey Arrington has signaled that Republicans should not abandon pursuing certain conservative priorities that were excluded from the initial megabill due to Senate rule constraints. Arrington, during a press call, stated that lawmakers are planning to revisit those provisions in follow-up budget reconciliation packages. He highlighted the need to reframe the provisions to ensure they align with the Byrd rule, which restricts what can be included in reconciliation bills. Key provisions, such as banning Medicaid coverage for gender-affirming surgeries and restricting noncitizens’ access to Medicaid, were removed from the Senate version of the megabill. Arrington believes these can be reintroduced with proper structuring to achieve their policy objectives while maintaining budgetary compliance. He also mentioned that the GOP leadership plans to introduce two more party-line packages in the 119th Congress, emphasizing the importance of aligning both chambers on the budget framework to avoid discrepancies in deficit reduction targets. Despite the Senate’s failure to fully comply with the House’s instructions, Arrington praised the fiscal hawks for securing $1.5 trillion in savings and urged continued pressure on the administration to ensure these savings are realized.
