Bipartisan senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal are giving President Donald Trump a platform to assert his stance on sanctions against Russia, following Trump’s recent declaration of 100% tariffs on Moscow. These senators, who have long advocated for stringent measures against Russia, are working on their own ‘sledgehammer’ sanctions package, aiming to complement Trump’s actions and strengthen his leverage in negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The senators’ bill, designed to impose tariffs up to 500% on countries acquiring energy products from Russia, has faced delays due to congressional Republicans’ push for passing Trump’s ‘big, beautiful bill’ and was earlier eyed for a vote by the end of the month. However, Trump’s announcement to impose the tariffs has potentially stalled progress on the senators’ plan, with the bipartisan duo remaining committed to supporting Trump’s position.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune noted that while Trump is taking his own steps, the Senate is prepared to move on the sanctions bill if it provides the president with additional leverage in peace talks. Graham emphasized the importance of congressional backing for the president, suggesting it would be beneficial for both legal and political reasons. Blumenthal praised Trump’s shift, calling it a ‘hammer’ that could potentially impact Russia’s position.
Trump’s latest move follows his agreement to sell weapons to NATO, which will be sent to Ukraine to replenish their dwindling supplies. The senators are hopeful that their bill, which has support from numerous Senate co-sponsors and House Speaker Mike Johnson, could enhance Trump’s position in peace negotiations.
