RNC Chair Criticizes Democrats for ‘Radical Woke’ Shift, Anchors Zohran Mamdani to National Race

Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani’s stunning victory in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary has become a focal point for Republican attacks, with RNC Chair Michael Whatley labeling him ‘the face of the new Democratic Party.’ Mamdani’s progressive agenda, which includes eliminating bus fares, making CUNY tuition-free, and offering free childcare, has drawn sharp criticism from Republicans, who argue it reflects a radical shift in Democratic priorities.

Whatley argued that the party is moving away from mainstream American values, claiming that every candidate aligning with Mamdani’s vision is embracing a ‘failed agenda’ that contributed to the GOP’s gains in 2024. This rhetoric has fueled a broader GOP strategy to tar Democrats with the label of being out of touch with mainstream voters, using Mamdani as a symbol of the party’s supposed radicalization.

Democrats, however, have questioned the effectiveness of these attacks, noting the stark contrast between New York City’s progressive base and the more moderate voter demographics in key battleground states. Rep. Chris Pappas of Tennessee defended his bipartisan record, stating that Republicans’ efforts to link him to Mamdani and other progressive figures are aimed at undermining his credibility. The political landscape remains polarized, with both parties positioning their candidates to appeal to their respective bases while navigating the complexities of midterm elections.
