Teen Arrested Over Paddleboarder’s Death Sparks Serial Killer Fears in Coastal Maine Town

Maine State Police have arrested a 17-year-old male in connection with the suspicious death of 48-year-old paddleboarder Sunshine ‘Sunny’ Stewart, whose body was discovered on an island in Crawford Pond. The incident has reignited fears of a serial killer in the New England region after 13 other bodies have been found in remote areas since March 2025.

The arrest of the teenager, who remains unnamed due to his age, followed the discovery of Stewart’s body on July 2, nearly two weeks after she was reported missing after a solo paddleboarding trip. Authorities determined the circumstances surrounding her death were ‘suspicious,’ with an autopsy revealing causes of death as strangulation and blunt force trauma. The suspect was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland, according to police reports.

Residents of the sleepy coastal town of Union have expressed fear and concern over the incident. Gus Williams, a local resident living near Crawford Pond, described the situation as ‘terrifying,’ noting that the town, known for its relaxed lifestyle, has now become a place of heightened vigilance. ‘In a place where most people don’t lock their doors, like, ever, it definitely feels a little intrusive,’ he told WMTW 8.

As the investigation continues, authorities have emphasized the importance of community vigilance, asking residents to ‘remain vigilant, be aware of their surroundings, and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.’ The recent discovery of Stewart’s body has also reignited concerns about a potential serial killer in the region, following the earlier sightings of 13 other bodies in primarily wooded or remote areas across New England since March 2025.

In addition to the Stewart case, the death of 21-year-old Adriana Suazo, found in a wooded area in Milton, Massachusetts, has added to the growing concern. The case remains under investigation, as Suazo’s body showed no signs of trauma. The combined cases have left residents in a state of anxiety, with many wondering if the serial killer is still at large and whether the area is now a target.

The ongoing investigation has not yet revealed details regarding any criminal charges filed against the teenager, and authorities have reiterated that the case remains open, with further inquiries ongoing. As the community grapples with fear and uncertainty, the incident has become a focal point for discussions on crime, safety, and the potential presence of an unknown killer in the region.
