Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson has reportedly recovered from an injury setback and will be ready to compete with Daniel Jones for the starting job in training camp. Richardson, who underwent surgery for an AC joint sprain in his throwing shoulder during the 2023 season, had a setback in June, but the team believes he is now healthy for the upcoming competition. The Colts have signed Jones to a one-year, $14 million contract to join the competition.
Richardson, 23, has struggled throughout his two seasons in the NFL with a 8-7 record in 15 career games, completing just over 50% of his passes and posting more interceptions than touchdowns. In contrast, Jones, 28, has a more balanced career with a 24-44-1 record and a 63.3% completion rate in his last season with the New York Giants. Both quarterbacks are entering a pivotal training camp as the Colts prepare for the upcoming season.
Richardson, a former Florida star, has been dynamic with his legs in his career, as he has 635 yards and 10 career rushing touchdowns while averaging nearly six yards per attempt. Jones, who was released by the New York Giants in the middle of last season after 10 games, then signed with the Minnesota Vikings for the remainder of the season but did not appear in any games with the Vikings. The Giants went 2-8 in Jones’ starts last season.
Head coach Shane Steichen has described the starting quarterback battle as an open competition, emphasizing that both players have the opportunity to earn the starting role. The Colts’ decision to sign Jones to a one-year, $14 million contract reflects their confidence in his ability to contribute to the team’s success. With training camp set to begin next week, the competition for the starting quarterback position is expected to be fierce, with both players vying for the opportunity to lead the Colts into the next season.
