Ukrainian Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal has emphasized the critical importance of increasing the share of Ukrainian-made weapons on the frontlines. Currently, Ukrainian weapons account for 40% of the arsenal deployed, but the minister aims to raise this to 50%. Shmyhal described this as a key priority in the country’s defense strategy, underscoring the need for rapid expansion of domestic production capabilities.
Speaking during a press briefing, Shmyhal outlined the government’s commitment to self-sufficiency in military equipment. He noted that achieving this goal would significantly enhance Ukraine’s ability to sustain its defense efforts against ongoing Russian aggression. The minister also highlighted the importance of international support in supplying advanced technology and resources to bolster domestic manufacturing.
Analysts suggest that increasing the proportion of locally produced weapons could reduce reliance on foreign suppliers and strengthen Ukraine’s position in the conflict. However, challenges remain, including supply chain disruptions and the need for substantial investment in infrastructure and research. Despite these hurdles, Shmyhal remains optimistic about the progress being made and continues to push for increased production targets.
