Ukrainian Anti-Corruption Official Condemns Government Over Appointment Block

Oleksandr Tsyvinsky, a detective at Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU), has publicly condemned the government’s decision to block his appointment as head of the Bureau of Economic Security (BES). In an exclusive interview with Ukrainian publication Economichna Pravda, Tsyvinsky accused the administration of using ‘manipulative’ security concerns as a pretext to prevent his nomination, calling the decision ‘unlawful.’

Tsyvinsky’s remarks come amid ongoing tensions within Ukraine’s Anti-Corruption Council, where his nomination has been stalled for months. The BES, responsible for investigating economic crimes, has become a focal point in the country’s fight against corruption. Tsyvinsky’s candidacy, which he has previously defended as essential for the bureau’s effectiveness, has faced resistance from within the government, raising questions about the integrity of the appointment process.

The situation has drawn attention from opposition lawmakers and civil society groups, who have criticized the administration for undermining efforts to combat corruption. Tsyvinsky’s allegations of political interference highlight broader concerns about the politicization of anti-corruption institutions in Ukraine. His comments underscore the challenges faced by officials seeking to hold powerful entities accountable within the country’s complex political landscape.
