MP Halyna Tretyakova of the Servant of the People faction has called for an increase in Ukraine’s subsistence minimum to better reflect the cost of living and address the basic needs of citizens. She highlighted that this measure is essential for ensuring fair compensation across various sectors, including healthcare, education, and public services. The current minimum, which serves as a benchmark for pensions and social benefits, has not kept pace with inflation, leading to concerns about the adequacy of support for vulnerable populations.
Tretyakova’s proposal comes amid rising living costs and persistent economic challenges faced by Ukraine. The subsistence minimum, which forms the basis for calculating salaries in the budget sector and services in critical fields such as healthcare and education, has remained unchanged for several years, despite growing inflation. This discrepancy has led to calls for immediate action to prevent further erosion of purchasing power among ordinary citizens.
The political force’s website reported that Tretyakova’s push for a living wage hike is part of a broader effort to address systemic underfunding in key sectors and improve the standard of, living for the population. She emphasized that without such adjustments, the gap between the economic realities of citizens and the state’s support mechanisms will continue to widen, potentially leading to social unrest and increased demands for reform.
