Ukrainian Anti-Corruption Leaders Urge Zelenskyy to Veto Controversial Anti-Corruption Bill

Anti-corruption agencies of Ukraine are appealing to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to exercise his veto power over the controversial bill No. 12414, which has already passed through the Verkhovna Rada. NABU Director Semen Kryvonos claims that the law is a direct threat to the independence of Ukraine’s anti-corruption institutions. He expressed concern that if the bill becomes law, it would significantly weaken the country’s efforts to combat corruption and hold officials accountable.

The bill has been widely criticized for its potential to compromise the autonomy of the NABU and the Prosecutor General’s Office. Critics argue that these institutions have been pivotal in exposing and punishing high-profile corruption cases, including those involving former officials and business leaders. The move has raised concerns about the future of Ukraine’s fight against corruption and the rule of law, with some warning that it could allow unchecked power and impunity for corrupt actors.
