Trump’s Bold Move to Lead Global AI Race with New Executive Orders

President Donald Trump declared that the United States will do ‘whatever it takes’ to dominate the global artificial intelligence race, during an address at a summit in the nation’s capital on Wednesday. The Trump administration has unveiled a three-pillar AI plan with an emphasis on American workers, free speech, and protecting U.S. technologies. Trump criticized the former Biden administration for ‘weaponizing’ and hindering AI innovation, asserting that the U.S. must avoid the regulatory path taken by Europe. His administration aims to free AI innovation from unnecessary bureaucratic red tape and encourage adoption across government and private sectors through initiatives like regulatory sandboxes and industry partnerships. In an effort to promote AI growth, the administration also plans to cut red tape surrounding the technology, arguing that such measures are essential to avoid repeating Europe’s innovation-killing regulatory path.

Administration officials, including White House Office of Science and Technology policy director Michael Kratsios and AI and crypto czar David Sacks, emphasized that the three pillars of the plan include centering American workers, preventing AI from being used to pursue socially engineered agendas, and ensuring the security of U.S. technologies. They highlighted that the new executive orders aim to boost AI development and infrastructure, including investments in data centers and energy systems, as part of the broader push to lead the next ‘industrial revolution.’ Kratsios stressed that by removing federal red tape, American workers would benefit, and the United States could avoid following the AI path of Europe, which is mired in tech regulations. He also stated that federal agencies will now review their rules and repeal those that hinder AI development and deployment across industries, from financial services to health and transportation. Private sector recommendations for regulatory barriers to be removed will also be considered.

Trump rescinded a Biden-era executive order that imposed restrictions on AI technologies, including requiring tech companies to report to the federal government about the most powerful technology they were building before it was made available to the public. The Trump administration argued that the Biden order ‘hinders AI innovation and imposes onerous and unnecessary government control over the development of AI.’ The new policy framework aims to solidify the United States’ position as the leader in AI, promoting economic competitiveness, national security, and human flourishing. The plan includes the development of an AI Action Plan within 180 days, led by the Assistant to the President for Science & Technology, the White House AI & Crypto Czar, and the National Security Advisor.

Significant progress has been made in the artificial intelligence race, with the U.S. facing competition from China in developing the most advanced AI systems. Notable announcements include Oracle and OpenAI’s commitment to expand the Stargate data center project, which is expected to create over 100,000 jobs in operations, construction, and indirect roles. The project involves a $500 billion investment in U.S. AI infrastructure over the next four years by OpenAI, Oracle, SoftBank, and MGX. Trump’s administration has also been active in promoting AI through educational programs, infrastructure development, and regulatory reforms, positioning the U.S. as a leader in the next technological revolution. The plan aims to foster innovation, build American AI infrastructure, and lead in international AI diplomacy and security. With the administration’s focus on AI, the U.S. is positioning itself as a formidable player in the global race for technological supremacy.
