During a training camp practice on Thursday, New York Jets starting quarterback Justin Fields was removed from the field after sustaining an apparent lower leg injury. The Jets’ head coach, Aaron Glenn, mentioned that the incident might have resulted from someone stepping on Fields’ toe, but further analysis is required to confirm the exact cause.
Fields, 26, signed a two-year contract reportedly worth $40 million in the offseason to replace Aaron Rodgers, who had two disappointing seasons with the team. While Fields didn’t play poorly last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team benched him after six games in favor of Russell Wilson.
Glenn stated that he is ‘assuming’ someone stepped on Fields’ toe, but emphasized the need to review the footage to be certain. He added that Tyrod Taylor is prepared to take over if necessary, highlighting the team’s readiness to manage the situation.
Fields has a track record of performing effectively in both passing and running games, as evidenced by his contributions during his time with the Steelers. He completed 65.8% of his passes for 1,106 yards with five touchdowns and one interception, while also carrying the ball 62 times for 189 yards and five rushing touchdowns.
Despite his performance, the Steelers decided to bench him, which led to the Jets acquiring him to become their starting quarterback after releasing Rodgers. The Jets have three other quarterbacks on their roster, including Taylor, who has a 28-28-1 record in 58 starts, making him a strong option to replace Fields if needed.
Garrett Wilson, the team’s top wide receiver, played college football with Fields at Ohio State, where the pair shared significant success. This partnership could be crucial for the Jets’ offensive strategy as they prepare for the upcoming season.
