As the excitement for the 2025 NFL season builds, at least one running back is set to miss out on the action. Houston Texans’ star running back Joe Mixon faces another setback as a lingering ankle issue will keep him sidelined for most of the preseason.
The two-time Pro Bowler will undergo further medical evaluation before the regular season begins, according to ESPN. His absence adds to a history of injuries that have impacted his availability in past seasons. Mixon had previously missed three games in 2024 after aggravating his ankle and sat out two games in 2022 with a concussion.
In addition to his ankle issues, Mixon has dealt with a foot injury in Week 6 of 2020, which brought his season to an early end. Despite these challenges, the 29-year-old had a strong season in 2024, rushing for 1,016 yards and scoring 11 touchdowns, along with one receiving touchdown.
His absence during the preseason is particularly notable given that the Houston Texans have bolstered their running back depth by signing All-Pro Nick Chubb this offseason. The team also spent a fourth round draft pick on Woody Marks, further strengthening their backfield for the 2025 season.
The Texans’ preseason opener is set for Aug. 9 against the Minnesota Vikings, marking the beginning of the team’s efforts to prepare for the regular season. The NFL preseason officially kicks off with a matchup between the Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Chargers on July 31, as training camps opened across the league this week.
