Billy Joel, the legendary singer known for hits like ‘Piano Man,’ has taken to his HBO documentary to address and debunk long-standing rumors that he was charged with driving under the influence (DUI). In his two-part film, ‘Billy Joel: And So It Goes,’ the 76-year-old artist has firmly denied the allegations, which have circulated for years despite his repeated car accidents. Joel revealed that, contrary to tabloid reports, he was never cited for DUI, and instead linked the incidents to his mental health challenges and personal struggles.
The singer, who recently announced a diagnosis of a brain condition, explained that the accidents were due to ‘mental fog’ and a deep depression following the 9/11 attacks. He told the New York Times magazine that the events were not linked to alcohol consumption, emphasizing, ‘I never had a DUI in my life. That’s another fallacy.’ Despite the persistent rumors, Joel has criticized the tabloid press for perpetuating false narratives, stating that the media’s focus has made it difficult for him to maintain his privacy and public standing.
Additionally, Joel revealed that his recent diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) has further complicated his health, leading to hearing, vision, and balance issues. The condition, which is more common in people over 65, has prompted him to cancel concert tours and undergo physical therapy. According to medical sources, NPH occurs when cerebrospinal fluid builds up inside the skull, pressing on the brain, and requires treatment such as surgery to implant a shunt to drain the fluid.
Joel’s battle with health issues comes at a time when his career has been under scrutiny. His wife, Alexis Roderick, has been by his side, supporting him through these challenges. Despite the setbacks, Joel remains committed to his health and has expressed gratitude for the medical care he has received. In a candid moment, he admitted that the attention he has received from the press has been difficult, stating, ‘Having that much attention paid to you is not easy.’ His latest efforts to address the DUI rumors and focus on his well-being highlight the ongoing struggle between maintaining his public image and dealing with private health concerns.
