Kansas AG Kobach Demands DOJ Investigate U.S. Environmental Lawfare Allegations
Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach has called on the Department of Justice to investigate the funding sources of an alleged ‘environmental lawfare campaign’ aimed at undermining the U.S. energy sector. He claims the Chinese government is financing litigation in the United States to bolster China’s alternative energy industry while weakening American energy dominance. Kobach specifically points to Energy Foundation China (EFC), a San, Francisco-based nonprofit with a significant presence in Beijing, as potentially supporting actions aligned with China’s strategic interests in controlling key energy technologies.
Kobach’s accusations follow his testimony at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, where he warned about China’s alleged use of legal tactics to disrupt U.S. energy security. Senate Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, led the hearing, emphasizing the importance of American energy independence for national security and economic prosperity. The Department of Justice has not yet responded to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
The letter from Kobach, obtained by Fox News Digital, outlines concerns over the potential for improper foreign influence over the U.S. economy. He suggests that EFC’s activities may align with China’s strategic interest in controlling critical supply chains for minerals, batteries, solar panels, and other energy technologies. Kobach argues that such efforts could undermine American energy security and national interests.
Fox News Digital reached out to the Department of Justice for clarity on the situation. While the DOJ has acknowledged the request for comment, no official statement has been issued as of now. The situation highlights the growing concerns within the U.S. political and legal spheres about the role of foreign actors in shaping domestic energy policies and their potential impact on American industries and security.
