European Defense and Space Commissioner Andrius Kubilius has announced that Ukraine and other non-EU countries in Europe are being invited to participate in negotiations to join the bloc’s new IRIS-2 secure satellite communication program. The initiative is designed to enhance military and civilian communications, serving as an alternative to private networks like Starlink.
The IRIS-2 program, which stands for Integrated Resilient Information System, is part of the EU’s broader efforts to strengthen its defense capabilities and reduce reliance on foreign technology. Kubilius emphasized that the network will prioritize security and resilience, ensuring that critical communications remain functional even in the event of cyberattacks or physical disruptions.
The move comes amid growing concerns about the vulnerabilities of existing satellite communication systems, particularly in light of recent conflicts and cyber threats. By allowing non-EU members to participate, the EU is signaling its intention to broaden its defense partnerships and foster greater regional cooperation. This development could have significant implications for the future of secure communications in Europe and beyond.
