Anthropic, the developer of the Claude AI programming tool, has introduced weekly rate limits for Claude Code subscribers, effective August 28. The decision comes amid concerns over continuous 24/7 usage and potential account sharing violations. The company has reported at least seven outages in the past month, attributed to high demand for the tool. The new limits will affect Pro and Max plan users, with varying levels of access to the Sonnet 4 and Opus 4 models. While the majority of current users are expected to remain unaffected, the restrictions are part of a broader effort to manage resource usage and ensure fair access to the AI programming tool. The changes will impact Pro users, who will receive 40 to 80 hours of Sonnet 4 access weekly, while $100 Max subscribers will get 140 to 280 hours of Sonnet 4 along with 15 to 35 hours of Opus 4. Those on the $200 Max plan will see 240 to 480 hours of Sonnet 4 and 24 to 40 hours of Opus 4. The move is seen as a necessary step to maintain service stability and prevent further outages, which have raised concerns among users and developers alike. Anthropic estimates that fewer than 5% of current users will be directly affected by the new limits, based on existing usage patterns. This decision reflects the growing challenges of managing AI infrastructure at scale and the need for sustainable resource allocation strategies in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
