Cincinnati business owners have voiced strong reactions to a violent incident that occurred in the city’s downtown area, gaining national attention due to its graphic nature and widespread sharing on social media. The assault, which took place on the corner of Fourth Street and Elm Street, was outside a popular nightclub called LoVe and a nearby late-night restaurant. The violent confrontation, which left one woman unconscious, sparked outrage among local residents and business owners who have long been concerned about the safety of the area.
Among those speaking out was Kris Koch, owner of Koch Sporting Goods, a family business that has operated on Fourth Street since 1888. Koch described the incident as a ‘hate crime’ and highlighted the ongoing challenges of managing large crowds in the area. He noted that while the club itself is a popular destination, the crowds often spill out into the streets, making it difficult for both residents and visitors to navigate the area. ‘It’s not just Saturday night,’ Koch said. ‘This happens every weekend, and yet nobody records anything, really.’
Another local business owner, Justin Karp, who owns Main Auction Galleries next door, expressed disappointment in the incident, calling it a ‘poor reflection’ on the city. Karp emphasized that violence is never the answer and lamented the fact that people chose to film rather than intervene. He pointed out that the assault occurred during the city’s annual Jazz Fest, which traditionally brings in thousands of visitors for music, food, and entertainment. ‘When you think of Jazz Fest now, that’s what they’re going to think about, not the 70,000 people coming here for music and entertainment and food,’ Karp said.
Cincinnati police chief Teresa Theetge has also weighed in, expressing disappointment that only one person among the 100 who witnessed the fight called 911. ‘That is unacceptable to not call the police,’ she said, adding that the fight occurred in a highly visible area with heavy foot traffic. Authorities have identified at least five suspects and are investigating the incident, though details about the charges and identities of those involved have not been released.
Following the incident, the Downtown Residents Council is preparing to hold a special meeting on public safety, aiming to address concerns about the management of weekend crowds and the role of local authorities in ensuring the safety of the downtown area. While the incident has raised serious questions about public safety, business owners have also expressed hope that the city can continue to be a safe and welcoming place for visitors and residents alike.
